What are trying to achieve? Please describe in detail.

I need to recover some space on a server and the salvage directory has over 2gb of old recovery packages. What is the proper way to delete/reclaim space from these packages?

Just delete them.
Unless you don’t have version control and need to keep a trace of historical packages in which case you might want to archive them somewhere.
