Is it possible to send an IDoc from Trading Networks to SAP; and if it is, please can you describe the best way to achieve this?

No TN cannot send IDOC directly/communicate it has to be thru a rule that invokes flow service (utilizing SAP Adapter services) for sending to SAP.

Correct. You will need a rule to kick off a service that utilizes the SAP adapter.
Such a service would look something like the attachment.

Yep that is the way to go and the only option via TN (Integrated back door) or register a TN delivery service calling the custom service (that sends IDOC to SAP)
