MVS/VSE and MVS/ESA

Hi! I’m not sure where to post my question…

Can anyone tell me what exactly is MVS/VSE and MVS/ESA?

All I know is that our MVS is running under OS/390. so where does VSE and ESA come in? are they utilities? OS?

Thanks.

MVS/ESA is a generation of the MVS operating system. MVS/VSE is not a name of a operating system but a enumeration of two different operating systems.
Do not mix up MVS and VSE. These are different operating systems. Each of them has multiple generations.

MVS/SP (24 bit system) followed by MVS/XA, MVS/ESA, OS/390 and z/Os.

VSE has similar generations:
DOS/VS, VSE, VSE/XA, VSE/ESA and z/Vse.

Currently we are in the era of z/Vse and z/Os.
