Can the Applinx server run on a different (higher) version of Java than the bundled JRE? What is supported?

it is not checked and not recommended.
There’s an intention to certify ApplinX 8.2 with Java 1.7 by Q1 2013. This will require an update to the software, the currently released version is not expected to work properly with Java 1.7.
