ifvar with select tag

Sample code below:

  %ifvar TIMEID vequals(sampleTime)%
    %value TIMEID%

    %value TIMEID%

Sample code above does not work. I want the results to check if TIMEID matches with sampleTime variable. If it does then make sure that it is selected. When I do %value sampleTime% the value does match one of the results. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the help.
