Is there a way to configure adapters that connect to hosts behind a firewall? For example, I need to configure a JDBC adapter in our offshore environment, to access a database that is behind a onsite corporate firewall.

In general, the problem is not configuration of the adapter. You will need get your system person to configure the firewall to allow the incoming connection from a specific IP address. The adapter might need to supply additional authentication information to the firewall, but that depends on the firewall and the companies security policies.
