how do i submit a request on a portlet using HTML forms and have the result of the request displayed on another portlet ?

I think you could use Portlet Wiring to accomplish this. Take a look at the help docs in the Eclipse help for Portlet Developer. The new Portal training module was just release on the eLearning site. If your company has purchased the Learning Passport, it’s well worth the time to take the online course.
