I would like to create an activity for my undergraduate class using Cumulocity and, ideally, their cell phones

I am a faculty member at Babson College and would like to create an activity for my class that can be completed in about 45 minutes. I played around a bit with Cumulocity and feel that it has potential to meet my objectives for my class. Students can set up an account, install the sensor app on their iPhones or Android devices, and set up a dashboard, probably in about 15 minutes. I don’t know where to go from there to make it at all interesting. Any ideas?

Maybe play around with smart rules. Geofence is a good one if they are using their phones. Show how they can be tracked and alarms raised if they exit a certain area.

Thank you. Can you give me some help in setting up such a smart rule?

It all depends on what you want to teach your students.

I found it interesting to query data out of the platform when I started using it. That would teach then querying REST if you want them to learn that. I also played around with the GPS coordinates of my phone in the platform, which taught me about putting data into the platform and then using the map widget to see the data. It may be interesting to have them create reports that show the location of their phone and have that be available.

If you really want to get fancy, you can make up a measurement and then create an alarm and action on the measurement. It could be something like temperature, duty cycle, % of hard drive in use, altitude, distance to Planet Mongo… the platform will accept anything as a measurement.

You’d need to give them all the steps but if you wanted to create a microservice and have that run, that would be interesting. Granted you’d have a tenancy with a whole bunch of microservices…

Apparently, the smart rules functionality is only available if the tenant is subscribed to the Smartrule microservice and the Apama-ctrl microservice. How do I subscribe to these services, and is there a cost for doing so?

I see that I am subscribed to the Smartrule microservice by default, but not to the Apama-ctrl microservice. I am subscribed to the Apama-subscription-mgr, but that’s all.

Hi Steven, I’ve sent you a PM with a link to our Learning Portal which offers free, self-paced courses.
